The end of May 1980, Dorothy Jane Scott attended a business meeting at the end of which, she and another woman she worked with took their coworker to the hospital to have a bite on his hand treated. When she went to pull the car around to pick her coworkers up from the front of the hospital, they never saw her again. As they stepped outside to wait for her, they saw her car driving fast and erratically through the parking lot and onto the highway. That was the last time Dorothy Scott was seen alive.

Part 1 of "Kristen's Law" walks through who Kristen was — the Charlotte-raised inaugural Park Scholar at NC State, in San Francisco for a summer photography course at UC Berkeley and working two jobs — and reconstructs the day she vanished, the seven-day delay before the Oakland Police Department opened an investigation, the bloodhound trail that ended near Sutro Heights Park, and the early moves the Modafferi family made when they flew west on Friday, June 27, and were told to come back Monday.
