36. The Happy Face Killer: Keith Jesperson

In January 1990, 23-year-old Taunja Bennett disappeared from Portland, Oregon. Days later, her body was found in the Columbia River Gorge, brutally beaten and strangled. The investigation quickly gained national attention—but not for the reasons you might expect. Instead of identifying the real killer, police arrested and convicted two innocent people: Laverne Pavlinac and John Sosnovske. But behind the scenes, a far more sinister force was at play. 35. The Grim Sleeper: Serial Killer Lonnie Franklin Jr.

In the mid-1980s in south central Los Angeles, a string of murders is connected, but the killer is elusive and is able to get away for a while. After a period of decades during which investigators believed he was no longer active, a new series of murders breathes life into their investigation once again, and they're able to use genealogical testing to narrow down their suspect list and finally catch the Grim Sleeper.

31. Aggravated Murder: Mackenzie Shirilla

In the early hours of Sunday, July 31, 2022, a car wreck was reported to emergency services. It appeared that the vehicle had ventured off the road and collided with a brick business building. Three occupants of the vehicle were extracted, two were deceased, and the investigation into this accident uncovered a harrowing truth: this accident wasn't an accident at all.
